People Are Different When They Have Hope

People are different when they have hope.
It’s a lesson Jane Prine has seen time and time again during her 23 years as a substance use counselor. At All Care Health Center, she helps people navigate recovery one step at a time. Because recovery doesn’t start with perfection. It starts with a conversation, a willingness to ask for help, and the belief that things can get better.
After years of leading programs and managing teams, Jane decided to return to working directly with people—the reason she entered the field in the first place.
“I wanted to go back to what I love to do,” she said.

Today, Jane helps people take the next step in their recovery journey, whether that’s asking for help for the first time, exploring treatment options, or continuing the work they’ve already started.
Jane knows that most people don’t walk into her office feeling hopeful. Many arrive carrying years of shame, guilt, and self-doubt. Her job isn’t to have all the answers. It’s to help people believe change is possible.
At the heart of Jane’s work is a simple belief: everyone deserves hope. When people struggle to see a path forward, she reminds them they don’t have to walk it alone.
“I believe in you, and you can borrow some of my belief until you get some yourself,” she said.
Over the years, Jane has seen firsthand how powerful hope can be. Sometimes it looks like someone showing up to group when they were ready to give up. Sometimes it looks like a difficult conversation, a small victory, or simply choosing to come back and try again. Those moments remind her why the work matters.
Recovery isn’t the same for everyone. Some people are ready to make major changes right away. Others need to start smaller. Jane’s approach is simple: focus on the next step, not the finish line.
That same philosophy led Jane to start All Care’s relapse prevention group. Because recovery is hard, and nobody should have to do it alone.
For Jane, the most rewarding part of her work isn’t a milestone or a number. It’s watching people begin to believe in themselves again. It’s seeing someone choose hope over fear, ask for help, or take a step they didn’t think was possible.
Sometimes, hope starts with borrowing someone else’s belief until you’re ready to find your own.
Because when people have hope, everything starts to change.
Sometimes, hope starts with a conversation.
